Newly released Jeffrey Epstein documents reveal that just two weeks before his death in jail, the disgraced financier’s attorneys discussed potential cooperation with federal prosecutors, while also exposing communications with prominent figures including Elon Musk and Trump administration officials.
Cooperation Discussions Before Death
An FBI document titled “Epstein Investigation Summary & Timeline” shows that on July 29, 2019, federal investigators met with Epstein’s legal team to discuss possible case resolution and defendant cooperation. The meeting occurred less than two weeks before Epstein died in his Manhattan jail cell. Defense counsel made no specific proposals but was told to contact the Southern District of New York if Epstein was prepared to accept responsibility for his conduct.
High-Profile Names Surface in Documents
The files contain email exchanges between Elon Musk and Epstein showing cordial communications and plans for Musk to visit Epstein’s private island in 2012 and 2013. The trips apparently never occurred due to logistical issues. Musk previously told Vanity Fair that Epstein was “obviously a creep” and that he had declined repeated invitations to the island. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also arranged to visit Epstein’s island in 2012, according to the documents.
Additional documents reference unsubstantiated tips involving President Trump and Epstein that were submitted to the FBI. The Justice Department stated Friday that some documents “may include fake or falsely submitted images, documents, or videos” and called claims against Trump “unfounded and false.”
Congressional Mandate Forces Disclosure
These document releases follow legislation passed by Congress in November mandating disclosure of all Epstein-related materials. The timing provides new insights into the final weeks of Epstein’s life and his extensive network of contacts. Epstein had previously served 13 months of an 18-month sentence after pleading guilty in 2008 to state charges involving solicitation of prostitution with a minor, followed by house arrest that ended in August 2010.
