John Thune RULES Out Filibuster Change on SAVE Act

Senate Majority Leader John Thune delivered a decisive blow to President Trump’s push for voter identification legislation, stating Republicans lack the votes to eliminate the filibuster rule blocking the controversial SAVE America Act.

Filibuster Change Dead on Arrival

Speaking at a press conference following a Republican Senate meeting, Thune made clear that efforts to modify Senate rules have no path forward. The South Dakota Republican emphasized there are not “anywhere close to the votes” needed to eliminate the filibuster, despite continued pressure from Trump allies. The SAVE America Act requires voters to prove citizenship when registering for federal elections and mandates photo identification at polling stations.

The House plans to vote on the legislation this week, but the bill faces certain Democratic opposition in the Senate. Under current filibuster rules, the measure needs sixty votes to advance, a threshold Republicans cannot reach with their narrow majority. Democrats have pledged to block the legislation, arguing it could prevent millions of eligible Americans from exercising their voting rights.

GOP Hardliners Push Alternative Approach

Senator Mike Lee of Utah, who leads the Senate push for the voter identification bill, has advocated for eliminating what he calls the “zombie filibuster.” Lee wants to restore the traditional standing filibuster, which requires senators to remain physically present on the floor while speaking to delay legislation. This approach would maintain the filibuster while making it more difficult to sustain long-term opposition to bills.

Constitutional Voting Standards at Stake

The SAVE America Act represents a significant shift in federal election oversight, introducing citizenship verification requirements that supporters say ensure election integrity. Proponents argue the legislation protects constitutional voting rights by confirming that only eligible citizens participate in federal elections. However, the bill’s fate now depends on traditional Senate procedures, as leadership refuses to bypass established rules. Thune’s position reflects broader Republican concerns about eliminating institutional safeguards that could benefit Democrats in future legislative battles when party control shifts.

  1. I’m extremely disappointed that once again the Republicans do not have the courage to do the common sense thing, which 83% of all American citizens want. It’s amazing that they continue to cower down to the vocal minority of people, who want have no other reason to allow illegals to vote than to return to power! Illegal immigrants should not have a say in our elections!!!
