The parents of Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old Loyola University student murdered by an illegal immigrant, condemned Democratic lawmakers for dismissive behavior during their congressional testimony about sanctuary city policies that they say cost their daughter her life.
Mother’s Powerful Testimony Interrupted By Political Deflection
Jessica Gorman delivered emotional testimony Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee, describing how her daughter was shot in the head by a masked gunman in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the shooter was a 25-year-old illegal alien from Venezuela who entered the United States under Biden administration policies. Sheridan Gorman died at the scene after the gunman opened fire on a group of students walking through the Democrat-run sanctuary city.
During her testimony, Jessica Gorman challenged lawmakers directly. She demanded to know when protecting American citizens stopped being their first priority. She questioned why her daughter’s life mattered less than protecting illegal immigrants, and why only Republican committee members seemed concerned about American children killed by illegal aliens who should have been deported.
Democrats Dismiss Hearing As Repetitive
Representative Pramila Jayapal of Washington acknowledged the parents’ loss but quickly pivoted to criticizing the hearing itself. Jayapal complained this was the fourth hearing on sanctuary cities, suggesting the committee had better things to do. Democrats on the panel shifted focus to President Trump and Immigration and Customs Enforcement conduct instead of addressing the family’s story. The dismissive response came despite new Justice Department charges against eight alleged Tren de Aragua gang members for murders and kidnappings in Texas and Illinois.
Thomas Gorman, Sheridan’s father, called the Democratic response disrespectful when speaking with Fox and Friends after the hearing. Jessica Gorman explained she attended to share her daughter’s story and discuss the human consequences of sanctuary city policies. She described Sheridan’s extravagant love for people, including starting a Buddy Bench program, but said she lost control during testimony after Democrats appeared uninterested in hearing about an American student’s preventable death.
Sanctuary Policies Under Fresh Scrutiny
The case highlights renewed debate over sanctuary city laws that limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. The alleged shooter had been arrested twice before Sheridan Gorman’s murder but was not turned over to ICE due to Illinois sanctuary policies. The Gorman family argues these policies directly contributed to their daughter’s death by keeping dangerous criminals in American communities rather than initiating deportation proceedings. Congressional Republicans are pushing for federal action to override state and local sanctuary protections.
