A prominent critic of Sharia law has endorsed Senator John Cornyn in the competitive Texas Republican primary, citing his legislative record on combating radical Islamic ideology in America.
High-Profile Endorsement Shakes Up Primary
The endorsement comes as Cornyn faces challengers, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Representative Wesley Hunt, in the March primary election. The endorser emphasized Cornyn’s experience over his first-term competitors, stating that America and Texas are not immune to the threats she witnessed firsthand. She specifically praised Cornyn for taking the threat seriously when others chose denial or political games.
Cornyn expressed honor at receiving the endorsement from someone who has spoken fearlessly about radical Islam from personal experience. The senator has held his seat since 2002 and currently serves in Senate Republican leadership. President Trump has remained neutral in the race, recently noting he is friendly with all the candidates.
Legislative Record on Religious Extremism
Cornyn’s office highlighted several legislative actions targeting Sharia law implementation in America. He recently introduced the Defeat Sharia Law in America Act, which aims to clarify that discrimination based on Sharia law violates the Civil Rights Act. He also co-sponsored the No Sharia Act, designed to prevent courts from enforcing foreign laws that contradict the Constitution.
In 2025, Cornyn introduced legislation targeting organizations providing material support to designated terrorist groups, specifically focusing on the Council on American-Islamic Relations. He also supported the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act and called for a Department of Justice investigation into a Texas development allegedly marketed as a Muslim-only community.
Primary Competition Heats Up
The endorsement arrives two weeks before the primary election, as all three candidates compete for conservative voters. Governor Greg Abbott recently designated CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations under Texas law. Both Paxton and Hunt have also taken positions against Sharia law, with Paxton filing lawsuits against CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood in Texas courts. The National Republican Senatorial Committee and National Border Patrol Council have endorsed Cornyn, while Paxton received backing from Turning Point Action.
