Treasury DANGLES Millions For Tips Exposing Government Fraud

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled a major whistleblower program that could pay informants millions of dollars for exposing government fraud schemes. The initiative targets healthcare fraud costing taxpayers an estimated $70 billion annually in Medicaid and Medicare scams alone.

How the Reward System Works

Whistleblowers who provide information leading to successful enforcement actions will receive 10 to 30 percent of fines exceeding $1 million. The payments come directly from penalties collected from fraudsters, not from taxpayer funds, according to confidential Treasury documents. The program mirrors a similar scheme already operated by the Internal Revenue Service. Individuals located anywhere in the United States or abroad qualify for awards if their tips result in substantial monetary penalties against criminals.

Minnesota Fraud Scandal Sparks Action

Bessent launched this crackdown after visiting Minnesota in January, where investigators uncovered a sprawling fraud network. Somali immigrants have allegedly stolen at least $9 billion from government welfare programs since 2018. Federal prosecutors revealed that criminals established fake autism clinics, phony food distribution sites, and ghost housing services. One scheme involving Feeding Our Future bilked $250 million from funds meant to feed hungry children. The perpetrators spent stolen cash on luxury cars, designer handbags, and overseas properties.

Banks Ordered to Heightened Alert

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network will issue an advisory on Monday directing banks to identify and report suspicious transactions related to healthcare fraud. Financial institutions must file Suspicious Activity Reports under the Bank Secrecy Act whenever money laundering or fraud appears likely. Treasury officials expressed concern that stolen taxpayer dollars may fund luxury lifestyles for criminals and potentially support overseas terror networks. Vice President JD Vance held the inaugural meeting of a new anti-fraud task force on Friday, advancing the administration’s zero-tolerance approach established by President Trump’s March 2025 executive order.
