TODDLER DIES Weeks After MOTHER BEGGED To Take Him With Her

A two-year-old boy died with broken ribs, burns, and signs of sexual abuse while Immigration and Customs Enforcement publicly blamed his deported mother for abandoning him, despite her repeated pleas to take her son with her during detention.

From Traffic Stop to Tragedy

Wendy Hernandez Reyes was traveling to her concrete foundation job in early January when Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputies pulled over her vehicle in Alabama. Working under the 287(g) program that partners local law enforcement with federal immigration authorities, deputies transferred her to ICE custody in Louisiana. An asylum-seeker who entered the United States in 2022, Reyes faced deportation after missing a previous court hearing. Throughout her month-long detention, she repeatedly asked authorities to reunite her with her two-year-old son, Orlin Josue Hernandez Reyes. Her requests went unanswered before her deportation in late January.

Death in a Caretaker’s Hands

With no other options during her detention, Reyes left young Orlin with her brother-in-law, Samuel Maldonado Erazo. According to later testimony from his own daughter, Maldonado Erazo was known as a heavy drinker who beat his children with cords and wires. On a March day, Maldonado Erazo called 911 claiming the toddler had collapsed. Medical examiner Deanna Oleske documented multiple broken ribs, a transected pancreas, multiple burns, and swollen testicles suggesting the child had been stomped on. Authorities immediately questioned the caretaker’s story. The examiner noted no toddler sustains such injuries from normal childhood activities, pointing to bruising on the back of the hands and knuckles as particularly suspicious.

Federal Response Draws Fire

After Maldonado Erazo’s arrest on murder charges in late March, ICE issued a press release claiming Reyes abandoned her son and chose to leave him with a violent murderer. The agency filed an immigration detainer against Maldonado Erazo, alleging he entered the country illegally in 2021. Community advocates launched a fundraising campaign to return Orlin’s remains to Honduras, raising more than fifteen thousand dollars. Reyes reported being deported without her passport, complicating efforts to transfer her son’s body across international borders.

Pattern of Separation

Grace Resendez McCaffery, a Florida activist and owner of a bilingual news site, documented six children left behind in a single week after parental deportations in the same region. She emphasized that family separation has become such common terminology that Americans have grown numb to its real-world consequences. The case highlights tensions between immigration enforcement priorities and child welfare protections, particularly when parents face rapid deportation while requesting custody arrangements for minor children. Maldonado Erazo has pleaded not guilty to all charges and awaits trial.
