BUSTED: Coach Gets 90 Years In Prison

A federal judge delivered the maximum sentence of 90 years in prison to a former youth gymnastics coach who secretly filmed young girls undressing in a Mississippi gym bathroom, closing a disturbing case that exposed institutional failures to protect children in the sport.

Maximum Federal Sentence Imposed

U.S. District Judge Kristi Johnson sentenced Sean Gardner, 39, to serve three consecutive 30-year terms for federal child pornography production charges on Wednesday. Gardner pleaded guilty to placing a hidden camera in a bathroom at a gymnastics facility in Purvis, Mississippi, between December 2017 and April 2018. Federal investigators recovered approximately 50 videos and 400 photos from his computers showing at least 10 minors naked or undressing. The investigation began when authorities examined his devices while probing separate sexual abuse allegations from Iowa.

An FBI affidavit revealed Gardner appeared in one video turning off the recording device himself. The extensive collection of illegal images documented his systematic abuse of trust as a youth coach. Investigators discovered the material years after the initial recording period, highlighting how digital evidence can surface long after crimes occur.

Victims Describe Normalized Abuse Pattern

Liberty Raines, who joined the Purvis gym at age 11, described a ritualized pattern of inappropriate contact that ended nearly every practice session. Gardner would have young gymnasts line up for hugs, kissing each girl on the forehead and patting them on the buttocks. Former students at his subsequent coaching position in West Des Moines, Iowa, reported similar grooming behaviors. Finley Weldon, an 11-year-old Olympic hopeful when Gardner arrived at her Iowa facility in 2018, told investigators he made inappropriate jokes and asked teenage girls about their sex lives from the beginning.

System Failures Enabled Continued Access

Civil lawsuits allege USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Center for SafeSport received reports about Gardner’s inappropriate behavior in 2017 but failed to remove him from coaching for years. Gardner’s Mississippi employer said she notified USA Gymnastics about his grooming behavior in January 2018 via email. Despite these warnings, Gardner moved to the prestigious Iowa facility later that year, where he coached until SafeSport temporarily suspended him in 2022 following fresh abuse allegations. SafeSport later determined coaches at the Iowa gym knew about misconduct allegations but failed to report them as policy required. Gardner faces additional potential charges in Iowa, with authorities waiting for the federal case conclusion before determining next steps.
