CHARGED — Teen Shot Dead on Zoo Trip

A 17-year-old Missouri high school student driving to Halloween festivities at the St. Louis Zoo was killed in a random freeway shooting, and authorities have charged a Texas couple with no connection to the victim in the senseless attack that robbed a father of his daughter just 60 days before her 18th birthday.

Deadly Interstate Attack

Willie Herndon, 42, faces first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges in the October 2026 shooting death of Alyssa Wilson. His wife, Taiya Herndon, faces charges for hindering prosecution after allegedly driving her husband to an Illinois hotel 12 miles from St. Louis following the attack. Both are from Arlington, Texas, and authorities confirmed they had no prior connection to the victim.

Security footage captured the chilling sequence on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri, around 7 p.m. on a Wednesday evening. Alyssa was driving south when she passed a white Buick Enclave stopped on the shoulder. A person exited the vehicle, stood briefly outside, fired a single gunshot, then returned to the vehicle and drove away with hazard lights off. The round penetrated the rear of Alyssa’s red Buick Encore. First responders found her with a gunshot wound and rushed her to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Family’s Dreams Shattered

Robert Hickman, Alyssa’s father, spoke through tears at a news conference about his daughter’s excitement for her future. The family had planned their first vacation together to Disney World so Alyssa could see Princess Tiana, her favorite character from the animated film. She was headed to the St. Louis Zoo’s Halloween celebration when the attack occurred, looking forward to adulthood and the opportunities ahead.

Investigators tracked the suspects using security video and automated license plate readers to identify the Buick with out-of-state registration. After surveillance lasting several hours, authorities arrested the couple Friday as they emerged from a Caseyville, Illinois hotel. A court-approved search recovered a firearm and supporting evidence. Investigators also collected a shell casing from the freeway shoulder in Overland for analysis.

Broader Investigation Underway

During questioning, Willie Herndon provided details about his involvement and information related to possible ongoing investigations in other areas, according to Major Case Squad officials. Those investigations continue as authorities work to understand the full scope of the couple’s activities. Missouri prosecutors filed charges on Friday, with bail set at one million dollars for Willie Herndon and five hundred thousand dollars for Taiya Herndon, both requiring full payment. The couple remains in Illinois custody awaiting extradition to Missouri to face the charges in St. Louis County court.
