James Erdman III, the whistleblower, told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday that Fauci’s involvement was intentional and systematic. Erdman revealed the CIA was preparing to call COVID-19 a lab leak on August 12, 2021, following a 90-day study. Five days later, on August 17, that position mysteriously changed. The agency refused to provide documentation explaining why, leaving investigators without answers about the sudden reversal.

Erdman testified that Fauci provided the CIA with a curated list of subject matter experts and pushed people in his orbit for the agency to consult. The agency accepted these suggestions without questioning potential conflicts of interest. Fauci contacted the intelligence community on two separate occasions in 2020 and 2021, shaping the narrative not just domestically but coordinating with experts in Australia and the United Kingdom.

Senator Rand Paul questioned Erdman about whether anyone at the CIA recognized that Fauci had approved research funding sent to Wuhan, creating an obvious conflict of interest. Erdman confirmed nobody raised concerns despite the information being publicly available. Paul pressed the whistleblower on whether Fauci’s influence changed the scientific consensus from lab origin to a neutral CIA position. Erdman confirmed Fauci significantly influenced that shift by injecting himself into the intelligence community’s process.

Public Health Policy Implications

Erdman’s opening testimony highlighted the consequences of suppressing lab leak evidence.
