Judge John Roach was removed Wednesday from the Karmelo Anthony murder case after defense attorneys challenged his impartiality. The removal came after Roach told a Dallas television station the jury got it right when they convicted Anthony in June for the stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet. The comments violated basic judicial standards requiring judges to remain neutral, particularly in cases where post-trial motions are pending.
Judge Michael Chitty now takes over the case and will consider whether Anthony, now 19, deserves a new trial. Anthony’s legal team argues the original proceedings were fundamentally flawed due to strict courtroom restrictions, improper jury instructions, and a broken agreement with prosecutors that influenced Anthony’s decision not to testify in his own defense.
Fatal Confrontation Over Track Meet Tent
The deadly incident occurred during a rainy spring day at a multi-school track competition when Anthony took shelter under a tent belonging to Memorial High School’s team in the stadium bleachers. Metcalf and his teammates repeatedly asked Anthony to leave, leading to an escalating confrontation. Witnesses testified that Anthony acted as the aggressor during the dispute. According to testimony, Metcalf pushed Anthony, who then pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest, killing him.
Jurors rejected Anthony’s self-defense claim when they delivered the guilty verdict. Prosecutors maintained that Anthony provoked the confrontation that ended in Metcalf’s death. The case drew national attention partly because social media posts framed the killing in racial terms, with Anthony being Black and Metcalf being white. As the case gained national attention, both families reported becoming targets of harassment. During the recusal hearing, Anthony’s attorneys focused on Roach’s televised comments defending his courtroom procedures and discussing the flood of online posts about the case. The judge’s public statements created an appearance that he had prejudged the fairness of the trial he oversaw, giving Anthony’s defense team grounds to seek his removal and a fresh hearing before an impartial judge.
