Wisconsin Man SENTENCED For Arson At Congressman Office

A 20-year-old Wisconsin man received a seven-year prison sentence Thursday for setting fire to a Republican congressman’s office after the lawmaker supported legislation to ban TikTok, demonstrating the dangerous extremes of social media addiction and political radicalization.

The Attack on Representative Grothman’s Office

Caiden Stachowicz of Menasha pleaded no contest to arson charges in November for the January 19, 2025, attack on Representative Glenn Grothman’s Fond du Lac office. Prosecutors dropped burglary and property damage charges in exchange for the plea. Fond du Lac County Circuit Judge Tricia Walker sentenced Stachowicz to seven years in prison, followed by seven years of extended supervision. The attack occurred hours after TikTok briefly went dark in the United States, triggering Stachowicz’s violent response.

Police discovered Stachowicz standing near the burning office in the early morning hours. He admitted planning to break into the building 55 miles northwest of Milwaukee to start the fire inside. After failing to break a window, he poured gasoline on an electrical box and the area in front of the building, lit a match, and watched the flames erupt. Stachowicz told officers he wanted to burn down the office because Grothman had voted for legislation requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based parent company, to sell its American operations.

Constitutional Claims and Mental Health Defense

During the investigation, Stachowicz claimed the government’s action to ban TikTok violated his constitutional rights and declared that peace was no longer an option. He insisted he did not want to hurt Grothman or anyone else physically. Defense attorney Danielle Gorsuch told the Associated Press the incident resulted from a mental health crisis, stating her client took every precaution to ensure no one was present in the building. Nobody was injured in the attack.

TikTok’s Future and This Case’s Warning

The January 19, 2025 deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok marked the flashpoint for Stachowicz’s attack. While TikTok service went dark late on January 18, it was restored less than a day later. President Trump has since issued multiple executive orders keeping the app operational. Two months ago, TikTok finalized a deal to create an American version of the social video platform. At sentencing, Stachowicz apologized without seeking forgiveness, acknowledging his mental and emotional issues provided no excuse for his actions. He took full responsibility and expressed no ill will toward Grothman, wishing the congressman success in his career. The case highlights the concerning intersection of social media dependency, political extremism, and mental health challenges facing America’s youth.
