A federal whistleblower has revealed that the United States Postal Service built a dangerously flawed system for handling mail ballots under President Trump’s executive order, warning the untested technology could trigger widespread disruptions in upcoming midterm elections if courts allow its implementation.

Rushed Development Raises Alarm

The anonymous federal official alleges USPS didn’t begin serious work on the ballot verification portal until June, giving itself less than three months to complete a project that typically requires nine to twelve months. Workers involved in developing the system feared it would crash and described the project as chaotic just days before its scheduled public release. The whistleblower complaint was sent to Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Trump signed the executive order in March directing his administration to create federal citizen lists and requiring USPS to transmit mail ballots only to verified individuals. A federal judge has blocked the order amid ongoing constitutional challenges. The federal government has never maintained a central list of all American citizens, and USPS traditionally only transports ballots between election officials and voters.

Critical Technical Failures Identified

The whistleblower describes a catastrophic design flaw in the verification system. If even one barcode on a single ballot fails to scan properly during verification, the entire batch gets rejected and returned to the state. In a bulk mailing of ten thousand ballots, one scanning error would prevent all ten thousand from reaching voters. The complaint emphasizes this design creates inevitable problems given predictable barcode scanning errors under normal circumstances.

USPS finalized implementation rules last month that would create massive new workloads for election officials and establish significant hurdles for millions of Americans attempting to vote by mail. Despite court orders blocking implementation, the whistleblower reported USPS ordered workers to continue developing the system. A Monday federal court order stated the government could proceed with portal construction provided states aren’t required to participate.

Blumenthal characterized the administration’s actions as unconstitutional attempts to reshape ballot casting procedures for political purposes. The senator stated the whistleblower disclosure demonstrates not only constitutional violations but also blatant incompetence incapable of delivering lawful ballots for the midterm elections.
