The View FACES FCC Investigation Over Interview

The Federal Communications Commission has launched an enforcement investigation into ABC’s The View over allegations that the daytime talk show violated equal time broadcasting rules during a February interview with Democratic candidate James Talarico.

FCC Chair Challenges Network’s News Claims

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced the investigation during a Fox News appearance, questioning whether The View qualifies as legitimate news programming. Disney and The View have claimed the show constitutes bona fide news content, which exempts programs from providing equal airtime to political candidates. Carr stated that Disney has not adequately established this classification for the daytime program, prompting the federal investigation into their broadcasting practices.

The investigation centers on Talarico’s February 2 appearance, where the Democratic candidate stated he and others were working to change Texas politics and take back the country. Carr emphasized that broadcasters will be held accountable for their programming decisions and compliance with federal broadcasting regulations governing political content during election periods.

Broader Broadcasting Standards Battle

The investigation coincides with similar equal time controversies affecting other networks. CBS recently advised Stephen Colbert against airing his interview with Talarico on The Late Show, citing potential equal time rule violations. Colbert published the interview online instead and publicly criticized the network’s decision, though CBS denied blocking the segment and said they merely provided guidance about regulatory scrutiny.

Regulatory Authority and Media Accountability

Carr dismissed Colbert’s public complaints as attention-seeking behavior, comparing public trust in national news media unfavorably to gas station sushi. The FCC chairman’s comments reflect broader tensions between federal regulators and media companies over content classification and equal access requirements. This enforcement action signals stricter oversight of how networks categorize their programming, particularly shows featuring political figures during campaign seasons. Neither ABC nor Disney responded to requests for comment regarding the ongoing federal investigation.
