Families of victims killed and injured in the 2024 Apalachee High School shooting have filed multiple lawsuits against the school district, its principal, and the shooter’s family, alleging critical failures in safety protocols that allowed the tragedy to unfold.
Legal Action Targets Multiple Defendants
Attorneys representing at least seven families filed complaints in Barrow County civil court this month. Three lawsuits involve families of the four people killed during the massacre: 14-year-old students Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn, along with math teacher and football coach Richard Aspinwall. The family of Cristina Irimie, the second math teacher killed, has not filed suit according to court records. Four additional lawsuits represent students who survived the shooting.
The legal filings name multiple parties as defendants, including the Barrow County School System, Apalachee High School Principal Jessica Rehberg, shooter Colt Gray, and his parents Marcee and Colin Gray. Several complaints also identify unnamed parties, suggesting additional defendants may be added as cases proceed.
Allegations Of Security Failures
The lawsuits allege school officials failed to implement proper lockdown procedures before the shooter began his rampage. One complaint filed by Morgan & Morgan states that Colt Gray targeted individuals before any lockdown was initiated. Even after activating the lockdown, the shooter gained access to a classroom through an unlocked door, according to the filing. The complaint argues Principal Rehberg and other school system officials negligently failed to initiate a hard lockdown, breaching their mandatory duty to protect students.
Mason Schermerhorn’s family lawsuit extends responsibility beyond school officials to include investigators at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. The complaint alleges these investigators failed to notify nearby school districts about a school threat Colt Gray made in Jackson County during 2023, potentially missing an opportunity to prevent the tragedy.
What This Means
The civil litigation unfolds as criminal proceedings against the shooter’s father, Colin Gray, have concluded with a conviction. Andrew Rogers, attorney for the Angulo family, previously stated that each failure to prevent the shooting represents an opportunity to learn. The Barrow County School System acknowledged the lawsuits but declined specific comment on pending litigation. Attorneys representing the Gray family and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office have been contacted for response. These cases will likely examine whether reasonable security measures could have prevented or limited the deadly attack.
