Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley has accused the FBI of deliberately misclassifying documents related to the Biden family investigation to obstruct congressional oversight and shield potential criminal evidence from public scrutiny.
FBI Tactics Mirror Crossfire Hurricane Classification Scheme
In a letter sent Monday to Attorney General Todd Blanche, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, Grassley and Senator Ron Johnson revealed that records obtained by their offices indicate the FBI intentionally misclassified information concerning Operation Round River. This bureau task force compiled derogatory information about Joe and Hunter Biden before the 2020 election. An undated email from an FBI supervisory special agent referenced classification caveats requested by the agency’s Office of General Counsel based on past experience with Crossfire Hurricane, the controversial 2016 investigation into alleged Trump-Russia collusion.
Under former Director Christopher Wray, the FBI apparently used classification methods designed to create obstacles for Congress and the American people seeking access to documents. Grassley’s office received evidence suggesting the Round River team may have operated as a Special Access Program, resulting in unusually high classification levels for its output. The operation functioned as a clearinghouse for claims about the Bidens, including potential criminal information, which were then dismissed as foreign disinformation likely originating from Russia.
Forty Confidential Sources Provided Biden Family Information
More than forty confidential human sources delivered information on the Biden family to multiple FBI field offices, according to Grassley’s October 2023 disclosure. The senator noted in Monday’s letter that his investigation into Round River, ongoing since July 2022, has revealed much of this information was stored in a hidden classified compartment. Grassley emphasized that federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies appeared to downgrade allegations of Biden family criminality without sufficient investigation, raising serious concerns about resource allocation and political bias.
The lawmakers also highlighted a December 2019 email from FBI Section Chief Tony Riedinger to FBI Supervisory Special Agent Joe Pientka that appears to corroborate existing public evidence that President Trump was the target of a political operation. Grassley requested this communication be declassified to the fullest extent possible under the law, though specific details of the message were not disclosed in the letter.
White House Task Force Declassifies Partial Documents
The White House Government Transparency Task Force recently declassified select Round River documents showing the FBI sought to red flag information from confidential informants regarding Biden family corruption and Ukraine-related topics. These partial releases have intensified demands for full transparency. The Justice Department, FBI, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence have not yet responded to requests for comment on Grassley’s allegations. The senators are demanding complete release of the document trove to determine the full extent of alleged misconduct in handling Biden family investigations.
