Hunter Biden SCORES Court Victory Over Trump Ally

A federal judge ordered former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne to pay Hunter Biden $1.7 million in punitive damages after finding he intentionally spread false claims about the president’s son brokering corrupt deals with Iran.

Court Finds Intentional Harm

District Judge Stephen Wilson delivered his ruling Friday in California, determining that Byrne’s allegations exceeded protected speech and demonstrated clear intent to damage Hunter Biden’s reputation. The judge specifically noted Byrne’s continued promotion of the claims throughout the litigation. Byrne alleged Hunter Biden promised to influence then-President Joe Biden to unfreeze $8 billion in Iranian assets in exchange for an $800 million bribe, claims the court found baseless.

The ruling included harsh language about Byrne’s conduct during legal proceedings. Judge Wilson found clear and convincing evidence of intentional misrepresentation with conscious disregard for Hunter Biden’s rights. The judge emphasized that Byrne repeatedly reposted articles containing the allegations across social media platforms and encouraged followers to amplify them further, even while defying court orders and skipping hearings.

Timing And Amplification

Byrne first made the allegations during a June 2023 interview before amplifying them on social media on October 8, 2023, the day after Hamas attacks on Israel. Hunter Biden’s legal complaint argued Byrne’s posts implied the younger Biden’s allegedly corrupt actions contributed to the terrorist attacks. The former Overstock executive suggested Hunter Biden brokered illegal deals involving Iranian money that enabled the Hamas operation.

Beyond the $1.7 million in punitive damages, Judge Wilson awarded Hunter Biden $1 in nominal damages and approximately $35,000 in court sanctions against Byrne for his litigation conduct. Byrne, a conservative activist and vocal Trump supporter, gained traction in certain political circles with his claims before facing the lawsuit.

Legal Victory Declared Complete

Bryan Sullivan, representing Hunter Biden, called the decision complete vindication against false statements. The attorney emphasized the court found Byrne had no basis whatsoever to claim Hunter Biden had any involvement with Iran. Hunter Biden’s business activities in Ukraine through Burisma and work in China have generated scrutiny and influence peddling allegations during his father’s presidency. Byrne has not issued any public response to the ruling.
