Lawmaker Fought FRAUD — Then Got Charged

Utah state Representative Trevor Lee resigned Monday after prosecutors charged him with forging documents and committing fraud to obtain a $1 million home loan—the same crimes he spent years campaigning against through anti-fraud legislation.

The Fraud Scheme Unravels

The Utah Attorney General’s Office accused Lee of creating false employment documents and inflating his income to secure the substantial mortgage. Prosecutors allege Lee forged an employment contract with the CEO’s signature from Enevive, a company he worked for, and misrepresented an offer letter from Blue Logic to make his income appear higher than reality. During interviews with investigators, Lee admitted to personally forging the Enevive CEO’s signature on the employment contract.

The charging documents reveal Lee requested $93,000 in cash advances from a Utah water company CEO to artificially boost his income statements for the home purchase. According to prosecutors, Lee promised to repay the favor by securing the company a lucrative government contract with Hill Air Force Base. The scheme involved communicating fraudulent documents throughout the mortgage process with Kind Lending, systematically misrepresenting his financial situation.

The Irony of His Anti-Fraud Crusade

Lee’s social media profiles showcased his public commitment to fighting fraud. He frequently praised Nick Shirley, a content creator who gained national attention for videos alleging fraud in Somali-run childcare centers and publicly funded programs in Minnesota. Lee even offered Shirley assistance after he faced fees for filming at Utah’s state capitol. Between 2023 and 2024, Lee introduced multiple bills designed to crack down on unemployment assistance fraud.

Vice President JD Vance recently announced a federal crackdown on COVID-era relief fraud, suspending over 870,000 borrowers from loan programs and warning of potential federal prosecution for those who defrauded taxpayers. Lee’s case adds another dimension to the ongoing national conversation about fraud accountability.

Political Career Ends in Disgrace

Lee resigned shortly after charges were filed, citing personal circumstances requiring his attention. His statement expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Utah residents but acknowledged he could no longer provide the service his constituents deserved. Even without the fraud charges, Lee’s legislative career was ending—he lost his Republican primary election in June. Lee did not respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital regarding the charges.
