Eight protesters face felony charges after a violent demonstration outside a Brooklyn medical center erupted following an ICE arrest of a criminal immigrant who allegedly assaulted federal officers.
Chaos Outside Wyckoff Heights Medical Center
The NYPD responded to approximately 200 disorderly protesters gathered outside Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood Saturday night at 10:25 p.m. Officers discovered crowds blocking vehicle traffic and obstructing emergency entrances and exits to the hospital. Despite repeated verbal warnings to disperse, demonstrators refused to comply. Nine individuals were taken into custody, with eight facing charges including resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. One person received a criminal court summons and was released.
The Arrest That Sparked The Protest
The demonstrations began after ICE agents arrested Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national in the country illegally with previous arrests for assault and criminal drug possession. During the arrest, Department of Homeland Security officials report Okeke attempted to strike ICE agents with his vehicle before physically attacking officers with punches and elbows. A DHS spokesperson stated their officers followed proper training and used minimal necessary force to complete the arrest. Okeke requested medical attention and was transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for evaluation.
Medical staff cleared Okeke, but officials say he threw himself to the floor and screamed during the evaluation process. As word spread about his presence at the hospital, protesters gathered outside. DHS characterized the demonstrators as anti-ICE agitators who turned violent, damaging multiple ICE vehicles and assaulting federal officers. Several ICE agents sustained minor injuries during the confrontation. DHS officials emphasized that assaulting law enforcement constitutes a felony crime.
Federal And Local Law Enforcement Tensions
The NYPD confirmed they had no prior awareness or coordination regarding the ICE operation that occurred Saturday night. This lack of communication highlights ongoing tensions between federal immigration enforcement and local police departments in sanctuary jurisdictions. The incident demonstrates the volatile nature of immigration enforcement actions in areas where protests can rapidly mobilize. The obstruction of hospital emergency access raised particular concern, as patients requiring urgent medical care could have faced life-threatening delays. All eight arrested individuals now face serious criminal charges that could result in significant penalties.
