Senator John Curtis has officially requested the Senate Judiciary Committee subpoena both Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden as part of a bipartisan investigation into presidential family members profiting from their proximity to power. The Utah Republican’s demand comes after reports revealed Trump Jr. received an extravagant private island wedding party from a Russian oligarch with ties to Vladimir Putin.

Russian Oligarch’s Wedding Gift Sparks Investigation Call

Curtis pointed to recent revelations about Trump Jr.’s May wedding festivities in the Bahamas, which were secretly bankrolled by Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch reportedly traveling with Putin to China shortly before providing the gift. The lavish private island celebration was confirmed by Bettina Anderson, Trump Jr.’s wife, who called it an extraordinarily generous wedding gift. Curtis described the arrangement bluntly on social media, calling it corruption that just stinks and declaring it a big deal requiring congressional action.

The Republican senator drew parallels to previous congressional investigations into Hunter Biden’s business dealings with foreign entities in China and Ukraine while his father held office or campaigned for president. Curtis argued that Republicans vigorously investigated Hunter Biden’s foreign relationships and should not abandon oversight principles now that similar questions surround a sitting president’s son.

Bipartisan Support Emerges For Investigation

In a formal letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking member Dick Durbin, Curtis requested a probe into presidential family members using their relationships for private financial benefit or preferential treatment from domestic and foreign interests. The investigation aims to establish facts, determine whether existing ethics and anti-corruption laws apply, and identify necessary reforms to prevent the presidency from becoming a vehicle for private enrichment by those closest to it.

Durbin responded favorably to the request, stating that corruption at the highest levels of government should never be tolerated. The Illinois Democrat noted that Hunter Biden has already provided sworn deposition testimony to Congress regarding corrupt activity allegations, while Donald Trump Jr. has not. Durbin warned that ignoring the matter risks making the committee complicit in a coverup and pledged support for Curtis’s investigation request.
