President Trump invoked the Defense Production Act to force the restart of a shuttered California offshore oil pipeline system, sparking immediate legal challenges from Governor Gavin Newsom and environmental groups who say the move violates multiple court orders.
Administration Cites National Security
Energy Secretary Chris Wright directed Sable Offshore Corp. to restore operations of the Santa Ynez Unit and Santa Ynez Pipeline System, claiming the facilities can produce 50,000 barrels of crude oil daily. The administration argues this represents a 15 percent increase in California’s in-state production and could replace nearly 1.5 million barrels of foreign crude oil monthly. Wright emphasized the restart ensures West Coast military installations receive reliable energy critical to military readiness amid ongoing Middle East tensions.
The offshore system includes three platforms in federal waters and an onshore processing facility, spanning 16 federal leases across roughly 76,000 acres. Federal officials maintain the move strengthens domestic energy supplies while creating additional jobs and economic activity for American workers.
California Vows Legal Fight
Governor Newsom immediately condemned the order, stating the administration attempted to illegally restart a pipeline whose operators face criminal charges. He accused Trump of sacrificing California’s coastal communities and 51 billion dollar coastal economy. The Center for Biological Diversity highlighted the pipeline’s involvement in a 2015 disaster when a corroded section ruptured, spilling 450,000 gallons of oil onto California beaches.
What This Means
The confrontation sets up a constitutional battle between federal energy authority and state environmental protections. Attorney Talia Nimmer argued Trump misused the Cold War-era Defense Production Act to help a Texas oil company bypass vital state laws protecting California’s coastline. The administration’s broader energy expansion push continues despite fierce opposition from blue states prioritizing environmental regulations over domestic production increases that could reduce American dependence on foreign oil suppliers.

Move on to the next crude oil project! Let California go bankrupt and then swoop in with a requirement that they allow higher level production. This is another example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Don’t be fooled the ass may say for military use and that just where it will go to support trumps war we the people will not get a drop big business put on your cargo pants you know so you can line more pockets with money
What should happen in CALIFORNIA, since the oil reserves are owned by the American People and Managed by the US Government and the Land where the oil Fields are on are Public Lands, managed by the DOI & BLM, The President should temporally Nationalize All The Oil Refineries and Oil Fields in California….. On shore and Off Shore and build the National Pipeline…..
Let the Oil Companies Operate the Oil Fields and Refineries as normal but, under control of the Federal Government. Newscum is out of the picture, and California gas can come down to $3.00/Gal. (~$3.00/Gal CA Tax) Then after the 2028 election the New President can return the Oil Fields and Refineries to the Oil Companies..
