War ENTERS Fourth Year Without Resolution

As Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine reaches its fourth anniversary, military analysts outline three potential paths forward: continued stalemate, shifting momentum toward Ukraine, or weakening Western support that could alter the conflict’s trajectory.

Stalemate Defines Current Battlefield Reality

Four years of grinding conflict have produced staggering casualties with limited territorial change. Russia maintains control over approximately one-fifth of Ukrainian territory. Military estimates place Russian casualties at 1.2 million, including 325,000 troop deaths. Ukrainian casualties range between 500,000 and 600,000, with 140,000 troop deaths, according to a Center for Strategic and International Studies analysis. Retired Air Force General Philip Breedlove, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, emphasized that Moscow has failed to achieve a decisive victory despite its numerical advantages.

Recent Ukrainian Gains Shift Momentum

Ukrainian forces have recaptured hundreds of square miles in recent days following disruptions to Russian command systems. Breedlove noted that Ukraine recovered months of Russian territorial gains within three days through a coordinated offensive. Carrie Filipetti, executive director of the Vandenberg Coalition, described these advances as the most significant Ukrainian battlefield progress in over two years. She argued that battlefield momentum could strengthen Ukraine’s negotiating position as diplomatic efforts continue through channels, including recent Geneva talks with special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Diplomatic Efforts Intensify Amid Fighting

President Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last August, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made multiple Washington visits since Trump returned to office. Trilateral negotiations occurred in Abu Dhabi and Geneva in February as international mediators work toward a settlement. Breedlove stressed that sustained American support remains critical, arguing that a clear declaration from Washington rejecting Russian victory would fundamentally alter Moscow’s calculations. The coming months will reveal whether recent Ukrainian battlefield successes translate into diplomatic leverage or whether attrition continues without resolution.
