Stalemate Defines Current Battlefield Reality

Four years of grinding conflict have produced staggering casualties with limited territorial change. Russia maintains control over approximately one-fifth of Ukrainian territory. Military estimates place Russian casualties at 1.2 million, including 325,000 troop deaths. President Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last August, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made multiple Washington visits since Trump returned to office. Trilateral negotiations occurred in Abu Dhabi and Geneva in February as international mediators work toward a settlement. Breedlove stressed that sustained American support remains critical, arguing that a clear declaration from Washington rejecting Russian victory would fundamentally alter Moscow’s calculations. The coming months will reveal whether recent Ukrainian battlefield successes translate into diplomatic leverage or whether attrition continues without resolution.
