A longtime Democratic donor appointed to Michigan’s economic development board faces 16 felony charges for allegedly misusing $20 million in state taxpayer funds for personal purchases including rugs, furniture, and patio supplies.
From Political Insider to Criminal Defendant
Fay Beydoun, a businesswoman who donated over $20,000 to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s campaigns and hosted a fundraiser at her home raising $13,500, was arraigned Wednesday on charges of fraudulently using public grant money. Whitmer had appointed Beydoun to the executive board of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the state’s primary economic growth agency. While serving in that role, Beydoun secured a $20 million “Michigan enhancement grant” in 2022 to establish Global Link International, a business accelerator in Oakland County.
Forged Documents and Personal Shopping Sprees
Attorney General Dana Nessel’s investigation revealed Beydoun allegedly forged invoices from a law firm and presented false lease descriptions totaling over $40,000 to the MEDC. Prosecutors claim she diverted grant funds for personal expenses including $6,000 in rugs, $5,000 in furniture, $1,400 in patio and gardening supplies, and up to $2,000 in catering costs. Raids were conducted at Beydoun’s Farmington Hills residence and MEDC headquarters as part of the investigation. Beydoun was released on a $50,000 personal bond following her arraignment.
Cronyism Over Oversight
Nessel condemned the arrangement in a statement, declaring the grant process “bears practically zero semblance to the traditional grant process” and was only possible through “political cronyism with minimal oversight.” The attorney general noted that while the legislature has enacted reforms since the Global Link grant was awarded, state agencies must implement stronger safeguards to prevent abuse of public funds “regardless of whether their recipients enjoy positions of power, privilege, and political connections.” The case highlights concerns about transparency and accountability when political donors receive government appointments and subsequently secure taxpayer-funded grants worth millions of dollars.
